i was part of the legal team who coordinated online to assist Cebu7, now Cebu 8 (because an unwitting bystander, whose only fault was to ask the police what happened, and who voluntarily went with them was also arrested.) The outpouring of support coming from lawyers offering to help, and various individuals who donated for the possible bail was simply overwhelming and encouraging. The vigorous support shows the that people are not blind to injustices happening around us.As it stands, it is not Covid that is endangering our lives but those in authority who place no value at all to our liberties, and people know that.
I am touched that young and new lawyers are volunteering to help, If 2019 board topnotcher Mae Diane Azores is helping Piston 6, our own King Anthony Perez is likewise with Cebu 8. Attys. Kristian and Patrick also went all the way to be physically present with the detained. BRILLIANT YOUNG LAWYERS are on the side of justice!!!
I am also happy upon learning that just within a few hours, the team was also able to raise an amount more than enough for the bail that might be recommended by the prosecutor’s office for the possible crimes that might be charged. More than enough to cover also the food for those who were still trapped inside UP (though we were told UP was providing, so, no need to ask the donors if it’s okay also to spend some for food. Thanks Chancellor Corro!) An offer to pay for bail even came all the way from Senator Kiko! Bail raised was very much ahead of the charges since police was still confused what crime to charge as of 5pm. Bail is ready, but police is not!!!
What happened to protests ending in arrest is symbolic. It bespeaks of a government, who in the guise of protecting the health and safety of the people, is actually the one killing them. Yesterday’s arrest, within UP grounds, was especially telling of how authorities violate its own rules, as UP-DND Accord prohibits such a police activity against a legitimate protest within its campus. It was the police who were violating rules, even of social distancing!!!
But enraged as I was upon knowing of the arrest, I chose to look at it also on the positive side — that people are helping and people are concerned. There are many of us!!! !
If the bail raised yesterday was a gauge of a growing resistance, not counting yet the offers of free legal support for the Cebu 8, this government should be afraid. Very afraid.
Much as I believe that this government the real deadly virus, worse than Covid, resistance is not futile!!! Government actions like these will not strike fear in our hearts, it will only stoke the fire!
P.S. I just read that basketball star Kobe Paras is also offering to pay out the bail. And many more lawyers want to be part of the legal team for Cebu8. How fantastic is that!!
